According to Stone World, U.S. imports of countertop materials totaled approximately $348.6 million in May 2026, remaining relatively stable compared with the same month of the previous year.
While the overall import value remained broadly unchanged, the composition of the market continued to shift toward natural stone. This development highlights the continued position of natural stone within the U.S. countertop and architectural surfaces market.
The trend is particularly relevant for international stone suppliers, as the U.S. remains one of the world's major markets for natural stone products.
New U.S. Trade Measures Affect Imported Quartz Surface Products
Another significant development in the U.S. market concerns quartz surface products.
On July 31, 2026, President Donald Trump signed a proclamation establishing a four-year tariff-rate quota on imported quartz surface products.
According to Stone World, the measure will take effect on August 15, 2026.
During the first year, up to approximately 13 million square meters (140 million square feet) of covered quartz surface products may enter the United States at a 25% duty rate. Imports exceeding the quota will be subject to a 50% duty rate.
The quota and tariff rates will gradually change over the four-year period. The safeguard is scheduled to expire in August 2030.
Importantly, the measure applies to quartz surface products made primarily from silica and resin. Traditional quarried natural stones, including granite, marble, soapstone, and quartzite, are excluded from this specific safeguard measure.
This distinction is important for natural stone suppliers and buyers, as the new measure should not be interpreted as a tariff on natural stone as a whole.
